Gospel Music Influences Other Musical Genres

Gospel music,which began during the times of slavery,has embedded itself deeply into society. As such,it has had a significant influence on other forms of music (musical genres) such as country,R&B,Roll & Roll,etc. How does Gospel music,created from hymns,influence a musical genre like Rock & Roll and Soul?

Gospel’s Influence On Rock & Roll Music

The influence that Gospel music has had on Rock & Roll music is the result of the soulful sounding music instruments played,such as the piano,acoustic guitars and drums. The idea was to blend cowboy and mountain music with southern and deep south gospel. Over the years,Gospel’s influence on R&R is also the result of another musical genre,”Blues,” which has a chord progression widely known for its 12-bar blues sounds. Gospel music is the combination of blues guitar and religious lyrics. together,they are magic,some would even say,heavenly. Black Gospel Music as well as Praise and Worship are soul soothing even amist troubling times and crisis.

Gospel’s Influence On Soul Music

Soul music is a primary element of Southern music celebrated mostly in the deep south,but it means different things to different people. For example,Aretha Franklin regarded Soul as the way her preacher father would sing at the pulpit. According to Thomas Dorsey,Soul is an adjective that should be regarded as one music â African-American gospel singing â for Christ. Ray Charles saw soul music as a deep look within one’s self.

African-American people describes the word “Soul” to highlight their feelings of being an African-American. It is a reflection of their core identity and places a very critical importance on the culture. This new found awareness resulted in Soul’s birth and similar music genres; to stress the pride Black Americans should have within themselves.
